Hazordous Items that cannot be stored in storage units

Every day we field questions concerning what can and cannot be stored in one of our storage spaces. Usually the questions are fairly common such as, "can I store my motorcycle in a climate controlled space?", or "can I store my antique automobile in one of your spaces?"

However occasionally we get an off-the-wall question such as the guy who called and wanted to rent a space to store pets in. Apparently he was a pet sitter, and he needed a place to leave the pets while he took his lunch hour. Not to mention the fact that he wanted to lock pets up in a storage space unattended, he didn't feel the need to spend any extra money for a heated and air conditioned space! To this day we do not know if the caller was serious, or just pulling our leg, as we told him that we could not rent him a space to store his pets.

Before placing items in your space, please keep in mind that we have some restrictions on what can actually be stored at our self storaage facility. This is for the protection of not just you and your belongings, but our facility staff, and our other customers and their goods. You will be required to sign our lease indicating that you understand and agree to adhere to the rules and restrictions regarding what items you are allowed to store. As a general rule keep in mind that we do not allow any item or material that is considered "inherently dangerous".

Here is a list of items and materials about which we are commonly asked:

Combustible, Flammable, Hazardous or Toxic Materials

Considered "inherently dangerous", these include gasoline, gasoline cans, compressed gas, propane tanks, kerosene, lamp and motor oils, acids, grease, corrosives, fertilizer, paint, cleaners, chemicals, narcotics, or hazardous, toxic, poisonous, or biological waste. Asbestos or products containing asbestos are not allowed. Lawn debris (grass clipings, brush, etc.), construction debris, or batteries whether new or used. In addition we do not allow the storage of fireworks, explosives, weapons or ammunition.

Tires and Vehicles

The storing of vehicles is normally acceptable in our non-climate storage spaces as long as they are licensed, insured, and in operational condition. (You must present proof of insurance.) We do not allow any customer to store more than four tires in your storage space at any one time due to the high cost of disposal.

Medical and Pharmaceutical Supplies and Equipment

While most supplies are acceptable, radioactive equipment, or anything that contains radioactive materials, cannot be stored at West Cantrell Self Storage.

Noxious Items/Odors

No Mothballs, cedar blocks, deodorizers, or any item that could be considered to produce noxious odors.

Perishable Food and Animal Products

Canned foods are allowed to be stored in our units, but perishable food products such as cereals, produce, or meats are not allowed as they will spoil and attract pests.

Other Prohibited Items

Birds, fish, plants, or any animal, alive or dead, cannot be stored in any of our spaces. Nor can any stolen items. Customers are not allowed to plug in, or use, refrigerators, freezers, generators, space heaters, or battery chargers. No one is allowed to live in one of our storage spaces.

If you have concerns regarding any of the items you plan on storing with us, contact one of our Storage Professionals, or refer to your lease and/or copy of the rules and regulations addendum you signed at move-in.
